WhoWhat

Proposal for community organization. This is not official/adopted. It will be clarified over the next few weeks. Many contributors are missing from this list as of 2008-04-11

Table of contents

1. Introduction

TikiWiki CMS/Groupware is a vast project. It's tricky for new people to know how the TikiWiki Community is organized to find the right person to contact and to start to contribute. What may I expect from others within Tikiwiki Community and what do others expect from me? Who does what? Who should I talk to? How does it work? This page is intended to help.

Important: everyone is a volunteer. Things get done because someone like you decides to take the time to make it better.

2. Community organization

2.1. What may I expect from others within Tikiwiki Community?

Community members do their best to follow TikiWiki Social Contract

2.2. What do others expect from me?

This section should be added imho to the "entrance door" to TW community: the tw.o/tiki-register.php form afaik or elsewhere (but somewhere very visible for ALL new users at least) (Xavi)

Others expect you to read understand and do your best to follow the Tikiwiki Social Contract.

In addition you are requested to follow these basic rules within Tikiwiki Community:
2.2.1. If you are not a developer
  1. exclaim Use and improve the docs
    Verbose mode:
    1. Search the documentation first and read the FAQ before asking questions.
    2. When asking questions update the documentation when you get the answers.
When answering questions please reference the docs/FAQs/etc. This will increase the visibility (and maybe overall usage) a valuable resource.
    3. Those who complain about the documentation update its pages to make it better.
  2. exclaim Report bugs or feature enhancement requests
    Verbose mode:
    1. A bug only exists if it's reported in the bugtracker
    2. When in doubt file a bug report or request a feature/enhancement in the bugtracker
    3. If you can't code yourself your own enhancement ideas don't expect that your request will be implemented in short if ever. You might be interested in hiring a coder to do that for you if you think that things are getting done much more slowly than you would need/like.

2.2.2. If you are a developer
The traditional basic 3 rules for developers
  1. Preserve Environment (see 3 rules for verbose mode)
  2. Commit early Commit often (see 3 rules for verbose mode)
  3. Make it Optional (see 3 rules for verbose mode)

3. Roles

3.1. Project Administrators

3.1.1. What
Also known as TAG (Tiki Admin Group)

TAG provides general project direction and enhances coordination of initiatives. TikiWiki rarely needs to vote because decisions are usually consensual and it's a doOcracy (external link). When a voted is required these are the people. This is the list on Sourceforge (external link) & Freshmeat (external link). Admins are by default in security squad. Admins are voted in by other admins.

Here is a SWOT analysis for TikiWiki. The whole community is invited to participated and it's the type of high-level stuff the Admin group should be particularly concerned with. smile

Tasks:
  • Add/remove CVS/SVN access
  • Anything that doesn't get done.
  • Vote as a last resort

3.1.2. Who

Private discussion list:

3.2. Elders

3.2.1. What
Individuals who have provided outstanding contribution to the project (usually ex-admins which have become inactive) and are consulted for important decisions. A bit like Past presidents (external link) in some non profits.

3.2.2. Who
  • mose
  • Florian Gleixner?
  • Luis Argerich (founder). You can learn more about him here and here

3.3. Security Squad

3.3.1. What

This is a trusted group with good technical skills that can help identify and solve security issues.

Security Squad members are added by vote by the Admins following recommendations of current members.

3.3.2. Who
All admins + All Seniors +
Louis-Philippe Huberdeau (external link) Tiki spreadsheet TRIM
Franck Martin (external link) Maps wiki plugins
Nicolas Dimitrijevic (niclone)
Stéphane Casset (external link) (sept)
Jean-Marc Libs (jyhem)

3.4. Developers

3.4.1. What

Developers in the sense of developing and improving TikiWiki. They could be people focusing on programming documentation support etc.

This is an open group. Anyone can join (just add your name to the list!). These people are or were very involved with TikiWiki. They can be good guides to get you participating in fixing or improving something in TikiWiki. If they don't know the answer they probably know who to ask for help.

Some ways for you to help:
http://dev.tikiwiki.org/How+to+get+CVS+commit+access (external link)
http://doc.tikiwiki.org/Welcome+Authors (external link)
http://tikiwiki.org/tiki-forums.php (external link)

Areas of interest/expertise
TikiWiki is a vast project and no one can realistically need all features. Thus some people are more specialized in certain areas. You can optionally add what your specific area of interest/expertise is.

What this does not mean:
These people are not gatekeepers. You don't have to ask permission to commit code or improve the documentation for example. We don't want any potential bottlenecks. It doesn't mean that these people are "responsible" to help you. They are volunteers just like you.

To reach "everyone":
