Basic Approach to "Conventional" Site

(newbie alert)

In order to make a Tikiwiki site that looks like a "conventional" web site, do I start with a Wiki inside Tikiwiki, and then sort of lock it down, as far as edit privileges, add menus, customize templates and theme, and so on?

Or is there another CMS function in Tikiwiki that's used to build the more conventional set of (mostly) hierarchically organized web pages that would be found in the typical brochure/non-CMS site.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Probably using wiki pages is the best approach, as this provides the most flexibility and enables something like a "conventional" web site. Some differences are that there's no directory hierarchy since a wiki hierarchy is flat, and page names are used in urls.

Of course you can make all or any part of your wiki pages editable by site admin or some group of registered users only, so the edit link, etc. won't appear to anonymous visitors, and only authorized users can create and edit pages.

Navigation is an important thing to figure out. One way is to use wiki structures to organize pages. This creates a hierarchy in terms of page organization and can place navigation "breadcrumbs" at the top of pages that are members of the structure.

Categories can also be used to group site objects, and now in Tiki 2 you can also tag pages.

In addition to Gary's suggestion of structures and categories, you can also use tags for navigation.

Remember there lots of other ways to "navigate":

  • Using backlinks
  • Displaying category objects and paths.
  • Using the breadcrumb option
