Trying to understand structures and table of contents

i am trying to get my head around table of contents toc

i did a fresh install of tikiwiki 3.0 and i have a main home page wiki. I want to create a child page and it seems like i can't do this. I put in a toc but i dont see anything. Until . . . i click on the dropdown on the top right that says "Structures". When i click on "Home" under structures (which is an item in the dropdown. I now get the home page and suddenly:

1. The dropdown on the top right is gone.
2. The suddently works.
3. I now get some additional top navigation which allows me to create a child page

So my question, is why do i have to click on the top right dropdown and chose a structure each time? Is there anyway so it defaults to this mode? This way i can navigate and add child items right away as opposed to doing this upfront effort.

akantro, ensure that you have enabled the feature structures. I've seen that warning on upgraded sites from 2.x to 3.0, after the upgrde process disabled structures.

else, consider adding a bug report at dev.tw.o

You can use any wiki page (including your structure's root) as the home page for your entire site. Please see the docs for details.

akantro, you can also try (besides the suggestion by Rick), to play with the options under "Admin > Wiki" (soe of those tabs) where it says: "open page as structure" or any other option related to structures.
Definitively this should be clearly explained in the documentation, so I encourage you to add to the Documentation (wherever you think it's the best place) your trick to make it work.

For sure, you could force that page to be loaded as within the structure by adding the required parameters to the url to be loaded as homepaage (see link pointed by Rick)
