Upgrading from 3.2 to 4.0

I'm sure this question is on many lips (fingertips?); I'd like to try out 4.0 and give it a whirl. I've only started using 3.*, so I have a moderate amount of content, but, since its all my documentation, something I'd hate to lose. I assume 4 is the new development path and, although it may initially be rough around the edges, will probably get more attention, developer-wise; seems better to jump on the band wagon now.

Questions on upgrading:

1) Can I upgrade over a copy of my existing 3.* database or does 4.0 have a new schema that may make this incompatible/generate problems?

2) If I don't go this route, once I determine that 4.0 is for me, is there a way to copy over existing data, permissions, etc from 3.* to 4.0? Or, even better, sync the two?

If there is documentation for this already, please point me to it. If someone in the know is willing to walk me through it and answer questions, I can volunteer to at least start documenting the process in return.

My opinion is that it might be a good idea to wait til 4.1 to upgrade, if you have a live site or content that you don't want to risk. 4.0 is generally stable and of course has tons of neat new things, but there are some quirks that may or may not be a problem.

The upgrade path is smooth, if you want to do it; just run tiki-install.php and click "upgrade" (not the other button on the left that will destroy the old database and create a new one).

If you want to try 4.0 while keeping your old site going, you could just install the files in a separate directory, and copy your existing database (can be done with phpmyadmin, etc.) with a new name and point to it with 4.0's install page, and do the upgrade there.

As long as the 3.3 site connects to its db and the 4.0 install points to its own, they won't interfere with each other, but you can test 4.0 with your content.

Thanks for the advice! I'll consider my options.

Out of curiosity, what do you think the time line is for 4.1? I know its early, but it sounds like its in the works already. Do you have a loose release schedule?

hi sonicbuddha:

Just a couple of notes besides chibaguy's answer:

Please read the documentation here: Upgrade and feel free to update it if you know how (you can always as on Irc if needed).

tiki 4.1 expected before Christmas time (at the most).
Good luck and thanks for helping to improve the Documentation
