How to handle problems of a multilingual site

Currently I run the site in English (tikiwiki 4.1). This works fine and the scope of features is impressive.

Now I need to move to a multilingual site (first en, de).
Selecting the languages in administration-> language is easy.

But then the problems start. I find a mixture of English and German on pages.
In lang/de I find
- language.php (with a section of ~6000 translated strings still some not translated and a section of ~6000 untranslated strings.
- untranslated.php (those strings are not translated at all)

For me as administrator, I am not bothered by the mixture. In the admin area I have no pressure to translate.
However the user area needs to be German 100% to be acceptable to my traget audience (non technical and non multilingual).

The questions:

1) If I do some of the translation, how do I get it back to the community and insure that the changed translation will be available with the next release.

2) I can find the string that needs translation with a search function in the editor.
In some situations I can find and translate the string and it works. Is there a more efficient way to do it?
Some strings cannot be found in this way (like Log on, Learn, Share in the header of the wiki home (possibly set in the template). How can I find and change such strings?

3) I can configure to select the language according to the prefered set in the browser. In most cases this works fine. In some situations the user needs to change the language of the dialog. I have configured that the user can change the language of the site. Where can the user find the language change button?

All string should be in the lang.php file.

Use the Switch Language module. Please see the docs...

Thanks HTH for your tips

1) See where to commit.
I am a programmer but I was not expecting this for the simple task of submitting some language corrections. Now I know
2) finding language strings. The trouble is, that an unexperienced user has no oversight about strings that are set by user entry fields on some configuration page. So if you are knowledgeable with tikiwiki the problem will disappear
3) Thanks, works as indicated
