I believe they are stored in a md5 hash filename, so basically each file is given a unique name anyway. To link I would guess you could use the external url square brackets and reference the file. YOu should be able to see the location from expanding the attachment section on a wiki page and hovering over the filename, probably appearing in the status bar??
Its a guess, If you still havent mastered it I'll look into it after Christmas break
