Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0, 1.8.4 Installation Headache

posts: 12

Hi,

I'm having trouble installing tikiwiki. The main problem I am having is that whenever I try to run the tiki-install.php script, I get a blank page in my browser. I have spent a lot of time trying to get tikiwiki up — I've followed all the install guides (there are two "solid" guides and about three or four forum/wiki entries with quick-fixes), set permissions correctly, and still nothing has worked. I've been over and over the requirements with my host's tech support and I've reviewed their php.ini file for odds and ends — I've even taken to trying to debug the install script! Nothing! I'm to the point where I would think about blaming the host if I hadn't already successfully launched many other sites with them.

To help solve the matter, I will try and provide as much info about the server's setup and versions as possible.

MySQL 4.0.12-nt
PHP 4.3.1
IIS 6.0
Windows Server 2003
Tikiwiki 1.8.4

Above, where I mention following guides, I followed instructions at the ends of the following urls:

http://tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=IISInstall&bl

http://tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=InstallWithOnlyFtpAccess&tikiversion=1.8.3 (this is a very well writtenguide — by the way!)

http://tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=IisWorkarounds

http://tikiwiki.org/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=11995&topics_threshold=0&topics_offset=15&topics_sort_mode=lastPost_desc&topics_find=&forumId=6

... and a few others in the Arch/Install area of tikwiki forums.

In my debugging I've not been successful at solving the problem. In fact, most of the work-arounds or instructions I've followed don't seem to make the difference where my problem is concerned. I have given as much information as I can think of for now (It's late — i'm seeing double-tiki everywhere I look). If I can think of anything else, I'll add it to this forum entry later. As I've not found too much about my specific problem, I think whatever comes of this entry will be a good helper for those out there who come across the same problem. Any suggestions?
If I can provide any specifics, please ask me. Your time is tremendously appreciated!

Thanks for the quick response!

I cannot see what the memory_limit is thru phpinfo. Does my memory_limit really have to be 16MB for the install? Just to be explicit, I'll list the php.ini readings per the tikiwiki requirements list.

GD = ?
file_uploads = On
session.save_handler = files
session.save_path = c:\\tmp
memory_limit = ?
max_execution_time = 30
default_charset = No Value
Server API = CGI/FastCGI

I put in a call to tech support this morning to ask them:

- if we can write to session.save_path
- about the charset
- to increase max_execution_time to 60
- about memory_limit

What about smarty? would a malformed smarty or pear setup cause blank pages? FYI, include_path in the php.ini is ".;c:\php4\pear" (quotes added by me). Also, after running the install script, I can see that "lib/pear" and "lib/adodb" are added to the include_path entry — I don't know if that info helps, but as I was debugging, it made me happy (hooray, something was working!). Hope this information helps. I'll post the exact memory_limit as soon as I find out what it is.

Thanks much for your time.

Memory limit can be the problem on windows especially in CGI mode.

For Windows I would recommend 16Mb minimum 32Mb to be nice and comfy for future expansion of the site.

Also get them to install turck-mmcache yes it does compile and run on windows systems!
and make sure that is only path listed in session.save_path, multiple paths seperated with a ; wont work.

hello,

I just wanted to come back thru and resolve my original forum post — problem solved — for now. The head developer from the hosting company I'm using called me and expressed interest in working with me to solve the problem. After going back and fourth on a few different issues, he decided to set the Windows server permissions to FULL access for anonymous users (and all users) at our wwwroot directory (and all child directories of wwwroot). I tried the tiki-install script once more and it finally came up. Since configuring tikiwiki I've run across a number of other problems, which may be due to bugs or my inexperience as a tiki user. I will know the answer to that question soon enough!

While I'm here, I should mention that giving Anonymous (where anonymous refers to windows permissions, not tiki anon-users) users full access (write and such) to your wwwroot directory, and all subsequent directories, is a bad idea. I am supposed to get back with my contact from tech support to rollback the server permissions, but I'm afraid tiki will die if I do so. I have users using my tiki site as we speak — it'll be my tail in the grinder if permission rollbacks kill tiki. I am NOT familiar with Windows server 2003 permissions setup — it is nothing like linux's setup — will safegarding the permissions with windows 2003 cause tiki to stop functioning in any way?
