BUGGY IMAGE GALS.: How to add permission to rebuild thumbnails?

Hi,

Me and other Tiki users in our university are finding many troubles with image galeries for the last months (using Tiki 1.8.4, and GD 2), in a similar way other people reported at the forums (browsing some images already uploaded hangs the browser for this session in Tiki, Sometimes, the internet browser connected to Tiki hangs when trying to upload a simple jpg file, etc...), and it recovers when you completely close all your windows of this internet browser and start again. Maximum image size in php .ini was lifted to 32 Mb some weeks ago, but problems seem to persist beyond that.

One simple solution is rebuilding thumbnails (if you have the permission to do so! :-), and here it comes the question:

I can't find howto add a the permission to rebuild thumbnails in image galeries for a specific group of users (students in class). Help appreciated. :-)

On the other hand, I read weeks ago in tw.o forums that image galleries were significantly improved for the 1.9 version of Tiki. Could this be also included in the official "stable" version of Tiki (1.8.x)? (since it seems that 1.9 is still away from being stable, according to TikiPlan19 )

Thanks to all in advanced! (I enjoy Tiki alot, and most of our users at university also do! :-)

Firstly

I think you need to be the owner of the gallery or even have tiki_p_admin

{if $tiki_p_admin_galleries eq 'y' or ($user and $user eq $owner)

Secondly

Rebuilding image galleries can stop the server from responding its happened to me 3 times! Especially in a largish gallery the server uses all resources and bascially grinds to a halt.

Thanks for the info Damian. Since we are coping with recurrent troubles with the thumbnail generation, is there a way to inactivate its generation, and link image galleries to the list of images (http://uniwiki.ourproject.org/tiki-list_gallery.php?galleryId=9) instead of the graphic browsing (http://uniwiki.ourproject.org/tiki-browse_gallery.php?galleryId=9)?

Most of our users (students at university), just want to know the image Id of one of the images that they previously uploaded to their "project" gallery, to include the image (which they already recognize by names) to their paper work. And in case they don't recognize by names, they could browse the image gallery by images at full size, instead of by thumbnails...

I guess I could manage to hardcode the change in whatever files need to be changed, but this would affect all image galleries in all subtikis in our multitiki environment. And I think it could be nice as an option in the image gallery configuration, in case thumbnail generation consume so many resources from the server.

Moreover, what do you think about my secong comment in the previous message?:

Should I send it to tw-users.sf.net, now that there is some movement about thumbnails, in order to allow other people also to suggest what to do about it?

Thanks for your time, and knowledge in programming good ICT tools. :-)

It is not possible to backport the image gallery changes because they require a database modification. 1.8.x series now cannot have any changes to the database.

You can simply modify the template to change it from browse_gallery to list_gallery and also remove the option to re-generate thumbnails from the TPL file.
