There is a rumor that tikiwiki doesn't close properly its database connection. THis is supposed to be done automatically by the adodb library ... but....it seems it is not.
Some people said to have done a special program outside tiwiki to close this connection. But nothing has been committed back.
SOmetimes you can have some indexes that are missing in your database. If you are on mysql, try the mysql slow queries feature to detect the slow queries. Try not to use the tikwiki search and the minimun of last modules to see if perf improves
