Could you be more explicit? (mysql version, how to attempt to connect to it, etc.)
This looks like you have problem with you mysql configuration, not with Tiki. Ensure you know your right database root password.
mysql database is working fine for tiki, afaik. You can test if you wish with TikiLiveCD if you wish..., to play around on a safe environment...
