You could use the group plugin to do this. Try adding something like this to your home page:

{GROUP(groups=>Registered)}

... your regular home page content ...

{ELSE}

{MODULE(module=>mod_login_box) /}

{GROUP}

This way, an anonymous visitor will see only the login box, but after logging in,the regular content will appear.
