Article Topic Permissions

I have set the forum topic permissions for one topic, EM Research Forum User Profiles, to require people to be Registered to view articles in that topic.

Can read articles (tiki_p_read_article) has Registered Users Checked on this page:

tiki-objectpermissions.php?objectName=EM%20Research%20Network%20User%20Profiles&objectType=topic&permType=cms&objectId=1

However, when I create articles in that topic, they are still readable to anonymous users from the Article Menu. (I am using the standard links that come in the Application Menu.)

I just installed TikiWiki so I have the latest release.

Please advise. I'd like any articles in the topic EM Research Forum user Profiles, to be non-readable to anonymous users. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Carrie

Couple of things...

Make sure that as well as giving registered users the tiki_p_read_article permission, that you've taken it away from anonymous users too.

Also, it may be the case that the anonymous users still have tiki_p_topic_read permission, so they can still see the topic (and possibly the articles in it) but they might not actually be able to read the individual articles.

Generally, for that particular topic, just take away all anonymous privileges.

Finally, try clearing your tiki cache (tiki-admin_system.php)

I know this works because I've done the very same thing, it's just a case of getting all the permissions right.

Thanks so much. I'm still having the issue. I cleared the cache and double checked the permissions but I'm not sure where to change some of them. I'm attaching a screen shot of the article topic permissions for you to review. I don't have any anonymous permissions checked there. Do I change them somewhere else? I was wondering if it had to do with permissions on the menu itself?

Thanks so much for your time.

Hi Carrie and welcome to the Tiki community! smile

(there are some other researchers in it wink )

Well, ensure that you have and understood the difference between "Global permissions", "Category (of content/objects) permissions" and "Object permissions": See Permissions

After that, make clear if you are using forums (that's what you say in your first paragraph) or articles (feature CMS in tiki), and what's the context of your question. I guess it's articles (cms) and not forums, for what you say afterwards.

Ok, said that, I've never used permissions on article topics, but as far as I remember , they had to be set (in previosu tiki releases) after you had created an article topic, you had to go there and edit that article topic, in order to see the icon of the key, which would allow you to set permissions on that specific article topic.

Ok, and if that doesn't work, it might be worth filling a bug report at http://dev.tiki.org
(it might very well be that article topic permissions have still some permission bug that needs to be squashed, so that your report, if needed, will be very helpful for developers willing to fix it: there are two at least willing to do so, as stated in the tikiwiki-devel list a few days ago)

Keep in mind that you can alternatively use category permissions, and these are much more tested, and should work like a charm. (they do for most of us, for many months already). Keep in mind that you can use categories in articles... :-)

Hope this helps, and again: welcome to the Tiki community! smile

Carrie, you say you're using the standard menu, so that to me says that you don't see links to specific articles or topics, but rather "list articles", is that correct? Which page/s can anonymous users see the articles on? (tiki-view_articles.php?)

Anonymous should be able to see the list and view articles links, that is absolutely correct, because you've (presumably) set global permissions for anonymous users to be able to see/read articles. (it's just one particular topic that you don't want them to be able to read articles belonging to presumably)

In fact they may even be able to see the "EM Research Forum user Profiles" topic because I just checked on my site and anonymous users can still see my hidden topic (I think that can be "fixed"). However, no articles show up under the topic for anonymous users ever though there are some.

Like Xavi said, take some time to read the documentation to understand permissions but to give you a crash course permissions essentially work hierarchically such that:
Object permissions override Category permissions which override Global permissions.

That is to say Tiki first checks Global permissions, then Category, and if Category exist they take precedence over Global, then finally Object permissions which take precedence over Category.

You should be able to set object permissions for article topics, like I said, I've done it in 5.1 and it works. If you could please answer Xavi's questions just to be absolutely sure we're pointing you in the right direction that'd be great!

Update: BTW, I currently only see 4 articles and none of them belong to the "User Profiles" topic, which shows up as empty. So if you have articles under that topic then your site appears to be working with the exception that I'm not 100% of how to hide the topic completely (which I'm assuming is possible).
