What causes high memory usage?

Hi all!

I am new to TikiWiki, but already installed it and played with it for a week.

I have a question though- what causes high memory usage? I need TikiWiki to store about 30MB of text articles /and some pictures and downloads too/. So, will that require about 30MB of RAM on the server? Because if so, I must forget about TikiWiki as I use shared hosting on HostRocket.com

Thanks!

Hi There,

The memory_limit has nothing really to do with the amount of data you need to store. Thats disc space. The memory_limit is the amount of RAM required to parse some of Tiki's code. Tiki is a massive application and needs more than the default 8Mb, 12/16/32, are all good values, the bigger out of the three being the best.

First question before you continue to use hostrocket is to ask them What is your PHP memory_limit set to? If they respond 8Mb and they wont increase it. Dont bother continuing and look at the TikiFriendlyHosts page.

Whilst Tiki attempts and seems to work in some 8Mb environments, It will get to a point where one day, it will just stop. especially once you have started to load up some "content"

Hi there!

Thanks for answering!
Well, actually, HostRocket? is in the TikiFriendlyHosts list :-) Which is good :-)

But I still do not understand what is the relation between the amount of content and the amount of memory used?

Thanks!

I just got reply from HostRocket. They told me that the PHP memory_limit is 10 MB. Well, how is that? Can I reply that Tiki will work stable with that, having in mind that I have more than 30 MB of data?

Thanks!

10Mb is enough for most operations on a successful tiki site. Im my opinion 16 or 32 is perfect and you'll never have trouble.

As you enter data, things like wiki pages needs memory to parse and convert into whats visible and displayed on the screen, longer pages take up more memory. Finding links between pages, takes memory, modules such as last changes, comments, etc all need memory.

Im going to update the TikiFriendlyHosts page re HostRockets limit. Its ok for a personal site requirement, but anything you need to rely on Id prefer to see more.

Hi Damian!

Thanks for answering!
I have few more questions /sorry, I am just new to TikiWiki but I am very willing to use it/.
1) Does TikiWiki allow people to rate articles? Not to comment them but to rate them? If yes- how do I enable it? /i didn't see it anywhere/
2) So, it won't be a problem to have even 100 MB of content data /articles+downloads+images/, as long as I don't load it all in the memory? But how do I do that? Or I'd better use something else /not TikiWiki/ for my articles? You can see the amount of articles at cpp-home.com -> the tutorials and the code. There are almost 500 articles!!! Will that be a trouble with this 10 MB limit?

Thanks!

You can setup various Article Types in the Admin Types section of the Articles menu. With regards to the amount of data, with that site of TIki in mind, youd want a host with 32Mb and turck-mmcache installed.

So, you are absolutely sure I can handle this amount of data with this memory limit?

P.S. If so, I think I will use something else for the articles, but TikiWiki for all the rest- FAQ, Poll, general admin, banners, users, Surveys, News, Quizzes and so on. They are not that big :-)

Well with that amount of data Id say 32mb minimum and install turck-mmcache

Hi!

Thanks for your answers :-) It was very helpful!
Now, I know I can't use Tiki for articles at this point, because I can't afford dedicated host.
So, I will use Tiki for everything else, and for the articles I will think of something else.

Thank you once again!

You dont need a dedicated host, I offer low cost TikiWiki hosting through http://tikihost.net those web servers are specifically setup to TikiWiki specifications for optimised speed and database access.

Hi!

I generate about 15-20GB of traffic per month, and I expect inthe next 1 year this to increase to 25GB per month.
Is that problem with this package: TikiWiki 1.8.3 GOLD (Annual) ?

Thanks!

I dont see it as a problem. You get access to full web statistics so bandwidth usage can be watched. The only limitation is fairness to others on that server. Its pretty quiet at the moment so there should be no problem.
